Doug Mason is no longer the head coach of the Graz99ers.

After the recent defeat (1: 3 at home to VSV), Murstadt’s team pulls the thread. It was the 11th loss in the last twelve games in the ICE Hockey League. After a good start to the season, the 99ers have now slipped to eighth in the table.

The 65-year-old Canadian-Dutch citizen replaced Ivo Jan almost exactly four years ago. In the 2018/19 season he won the regular season and qualified for the Champions Hockey League.

Jens Gustafsson, formerly an assistant coach, takes over. The 46-year-old Swede has Patrick Harand as an assistant coach.

Gustafsson’s replacement preferred

“It was definitely a tough decision, but inevitable after eleven losses in twelve games. Doug Mason has accumulated a lot of good things in Graz over the last four years and has done a very good job,” said general manager Bernd Vollmann.

Jens Gustafsson has been with the 99ers as an assistant since 2018 and therefore knows the team well. The Grazers are the first foreign season for the Swede, who was able to gain experience as a junior coach in his home country, but was also part of the gang in Boras as a head coach in the Allsvenskan. At SHL-Klub Örebrö was, meanwhile, Director of Scouting.

“In long-term planning, Jens was always his successor, this step has now been advanced. We still have a chance to be in the top 5 and a direct entry to the playoffs,” reveals Vollmann.
