In an interview with the bz, the new district president Martin Fabisch (Greens) explained some projects for 2021.
JOSEFSTADT. He is now the new district president for Josefstadt. What main themes were decisive for the turnaround from turquoise to green?
MARTIN FABIC: The election result showed that our great goal of a climate-friendly Josefstadt was well received. The people of Josefstadt are open to the world and have decided to change because the climate crisis now requires concrete action. With strong projects in the transport sector and in the public space, we will enter a green and lively future in Josefstadt.
The coronavirus presents everyone with unprecedented problems. How will you proceed from 2021?
We will focus on climate protection measures and the quality of stay in the district: more green spaces, a doubling of the tree population and an evenly distributed public space, especially for pedestrians and cyclists. We can only tackle together the great challenges of our time, the climate and crown crisis. Therefore, I invite all parties to work with us on this.
What retail and gastronomy aid packages can you imagine?
At the end of 2020, the culture budget for cultural events in restaurants was expanded. This support will also be provided next year together with the SPÖ. I also ask all residents of Josefstadt to shop in their area, because small family businesses in the district need support right now. In addition, planned road improvements, such as reduced traffic and green measures, ensure trade.
Apart from containing the coronavirus: What other projects are planned for 2021?
The Trude-Waehner-Platz redesign and the Pfeilgasse school forecourt are projects that will help improve the quality of stay in the district. In 2021, the first steps will also be taken to redesign Josef-Matthias-Hauer-Platz and Josefstädter Straße. The first surveys for this will begin this year. In the next five years, many other projects will be implemented, which should lead to an increase in the quality of life in Josefstadt. It is important to me to actively involve residents in order to create more space and space for everyone.
Why are we in front of the Nameless Café?
I spent a lot of time here with the former head of the green district Heribert Rahdjian. Here we have also decided to go back together in a partisan way. This support certainly helped me a lot with my choice.
