The debate on the obligation to wear FFP2 masks is likely to lead to a delay in the start of the season in several ski areas in western Austria. With elevator operators still unregulated, “December 24 is really shaking for the start of operations,” Salzburg cable car spokesman Erich Egger told APA on Monday afternoon.

“We do not have any written documents, only draft regulations and therefore we do not yet know if it still includes the obligation to use FFP2 masks.” For the elevator operator, however, there is a significant difference in preparation. A meeting of the cable car industry, which was scheduled for 1 pm today to coordinate with each other, had to be canceled on short notice, the managing director of Schmittenhöhenbahn said.

Ski areas – FFP-2 mask requirement in lift

In response to a request from the APA, the Health Ministry said the draft had been published in a broadcast earlier today, Monday afternoon. It reads: “The cable cars will also be open to amateur athletes on December 24, 2020 under the following conditions: distance obligation and MNS obligation, maximum 50 percent utilization of gondolas and covered armchairs, unless users live in the same household. An FFP2 mask or equivalent or a mask corresponding to a higher standard must be worn during transportation and in the access area. ” In addition, cable car operators must present a prevention concept.

Rejection of the request from the western federal states

Therefore, the request by the western federal states to remove the FFP2 obligation from the ordinance was not taken into account in the draft. The states coordinated with each other under the leadership of Salzburg Governor Wilfried Haslauer (ÖVP) and then deposited this matter with the ministry, said their spokesman Christian Pucher.

The ski lifts can open for two days shortly before the third closing. However, there is a huge criticism to the specifications. Cable car spokesman Erich Egger is particularly angered by the FFP2 mask requirement.

There is some resistance among tourism professionals and cable car operators to the FFP2 mask requirement when using climbing aids. After all, it is argued that there is no other mode of transport in which this category of protective mask is mandatory. “That is very difficult to understand,” criticizes Erich Egger, spokesman for the Salzburg cable car industry, in a report by ORF Salzburg.

FFP2 masks on the ski lift

“If a guest wearing a normal surgical mask comes to the tourniquet, we would have to stop him. Then he has to see if he can get an FFP2 mask somewhere,” said the industry representative. The “normal” masks are sufficient to be transported in trains, subways, planes and the like; in cabins, gondolas and in the drag lift, like when you stand in line there, but no.

Egger complains that the additional effort and costs for the cable car and elevator operators are too high. “Those are obstacles that we have to overcome in a very short time. Some do not see themselves in a position to do it that way.”
