Austrian football fans were surprised by SK Rapid’s relatively large share in the government sports league funding fund (all info >>>).
Now the Hütteldorfers have made a statement and explained how the rumored crown funding of almost two million euros should have come about.
“In phase 1 rumored for the March to June period, the SK Rapid possibly received the highest proportion of funding to reduce the damage caused by Covid-19. If this is the case, then it is easy to explain: The SK Rapid are the biggest hit among national football clubs. With an average of 18,666 spectators per home game in the basic Bundesliga season alone, without the particularly strong crowd in the championship season, Hütteldorfer is by far the one that attracts the most public, “says the SK Rapid statement.
Furthermore, Hütteldorfer stresses that after the league croesus Red Bull Salzburg, which voluntarily renounced funding, is clearly the Bundesliga club with the highest turnover: “With a total turnover of 42 million euros, SK Rapid was by far last year the club with the highest turnover after Salzburg. That just shows a clear difference, which is probably also reflected in the fund’s subsidies. “
The full statement in its entirety:
As is well known, Covid-19 brought most of the operational business to a standstill in the spring and, unfortunately, the current financial year is also heavily impacted by Covid-19 restrictions, which is why there has been and continues to be a enormous emotional and financial damage, through no fault of our own. Political support is vitally important to preserving professional clubs and their social, economic and fiscal importance, for which we are very grateful for your support.
Basically, it should be noted at this point that government support not only in sports, but in all areas such as gastronomy, hotels, etc. it is always based on the amount of damage. And so in football as in hospitality, the more damage, the more aid from the State.
The reporting of claims on the funds of the Covic-19 sports leagues should be divided into several phases. In the supposed phase 1 for the period from March to June, SK Rapid possibly received the largest proportion of the funds to reduce the damage caused by Covid-19. If this is the case, then it is easy to explain: SK Rapid is the main victim among national football clubs. With an average of 18,666 spectators per home game in the basic round of the Bundesliga alone, without the particularly strong crowd in the championship round, the Hütteldorfer is by far the biggest draw. For comparison: in the 2019/20 season, the Bundesliga average was 6,320 spectators, including quick games of course. With a total turnover of € 42 million, SK Rapid was by far the highest-grossing club after Salzburg last year. That alone shows a clear difference, which is likely to be reflected in the fund’s grants as well.
In the Covid-19 sports league funds, of course, only the actual damage that must be verified and approved by the auditor is reported and partially replaced, due to Covid-19, and here only those of the home games of the Bundesliga, this includes, for example, hospitality, ticketing, gastronomy, Sponsorship and partial marketing. Of course, all reduced expenses must be deducted and the best possible damage reduction is a prerequisite. Lost income from UEFA competitions or the ÖFB Cup was not covered by the fund. It is well known that professional clubs have three main business areas: national competitions, transfers and international competitions. For example, SK Rapid would have achieved a total turnover of around 3 million euros in the three home games in international competition alone, which have now been completely eliminated, as well as the possible loss of transfer income.
SK Rapid has always communicated all of this clearly. Subsidies can also be found in the transparency database, so they are no secret, the pandemic is creating huge challenges for society, the economy and sports, so we are grateful that politicians have provided this support to the affected. It remains to be seen what the distribution will look like in the later phases.
