“Freedom and coercion do not go together. A vaccine shows the way to freedom. Therefore, I do not consider mandatory vaccination to make sense,” says Chamber of Commerce President Harald Mahrer. However, you could imagine that certain options when buying or consuming culture and sports are only possible live if a test is presented and the app is activated.
Mahrer describes the fact that the first vaccine is now approved as a Christmas miracle. As for explanations, politics must take a backseat and leave the stage for transparency of information to experts.
Mahrer cannot understand that there is now astonishment that the virus, after relaxing in the summer, is attacking again. It was clear that the pandemic would hit us again in several waves starting in the fall. However, this is not due to the hospitality industry, the sectors have provided exemplary precautions.
There is praise for the government’s Corona aid measures, where Austria is definitely number one in Europe and, for example, support transfers are much faster than Germany. For example, the generous solution for short-time work has ensured massive purchasing power.
Most of the short-time work
As of December 15, almost 29,000 million euros of financial aid have been granted or disbursed. Most of the 9.4 billion euros was spent on part-time jobs. Payments for the fixed cost grant (€ 411.2 million) and the emergency fund (€ 821.5 million) constituted a relatively small part.
Mahrer would like the government to become more involved in the planned measures and provide timely information; the main issue here is planning security. That is also one of the main concerns of the workers’ representatives. “The winter is going to be hard,” said the president of the Chamber of Commerce.
