It was a very quiet farewell: at 7:52 pm the final whistle sounded in the empty Linz stadium, coinciding with the opening in 1952. LASK left Gugl in the last match before the demolition as a cup quarter-finalist, the team of Vienna City League ASK Elektra was 3-0, the latest loser in the stadium’s 68-year history.
In 1962, 33,000 spectators packed the stands at LASK 3: 3 against the Wiener Sportclub, yesterday 194 were in the stadium, from the players to the officials, referees and stewards. The eleven players in LASK’s starting line-up quickly made it clear who would win the final – after a moment of shock: 19 seconds were played when goalkeeper Alexander Schlager had to stop Taner Sen’s shot – a minute later it was 1-0 for LASK: Johannes Eggestein used the assistance of Mads Emil Madsen.
ASK Elektra last played a competitive match on October 31 and was only allowed to train before the knockout stages thanks to special permission. Consequently, it was easy for LASK. Eggestein also scored 2-0 and 3-0 (15th, 34th). It was the first flawless competitive hat-trick by a LASK player since Radovan Vujanovic in May 2013 (3-0 in the regional league in Allerheiligen), Ivica Vastic achieved the last win at the Gugl in November 2005 (5-1 against Kapfenberg in the first League). Vastic even scored four goals at the time.
In the fourth, Eggestein was also close to the shot from the pole (63rd), Rene Renner (50th), Dominik Reiter (59th) and Madsen (91st) only hit aluminum. James Holland missed the final whistle: he limped off the field (84th). “He felt a puncture in his thigh,” coach Dominik Thalhammer said.

Farewell fireworks
Soon after, the stadium announcer Wolfgang Fröschl started the swan song at the Linz stadium. Fans in black and white waved goodbye with fireworks as spectators on the stadium esplanade: the first during the minute of silence of the late former LASK coach Otto Baric immediately before kick-off, the second to kick off the second half. LASK will return in 2022, at the new Raiffeisen Arena.

Souvenir for fans
The demolition of the Linz stadium begins in January, the fans can start doing the preparatory work immediately: today, tomorrow and Monday (12 noon to 6pm) the breakwater seats in sectors one to seven will be sold at 19, 08 euros each. The old Gugl keepsake must be disassembled by the pendants themselves and a 17mm open-end wrench with them.

LASK will meet Austria Klagenfurt in the quarter-finals
Yesterday’s quarter-final draw could have been worse for LASK – ORF man Roman Rafreider drew in black and white as the first of eight remaining teams. Opponent in the home game is second division runner-up Austria Klagenfurt.
After their spring catch-up run, in which they scored nearly eight points behind SV Ried, the Carinthians started this season very badly. However, the Klagenfurters, who are served by former LASK player Robert Micheu, are well positioned with players like top scorer Markus Pink. However, the Carinthians were a draw for LASK. In the cup there were four victories for the athletes against Klagenfurt in four games. However, the last hit dates from 1984.
Salzburg with a great victory
In the cup round hit, Salzburg defeated SK Rapid 6: 2 (3: 1) yesterday, and now faces Vienna Austria. Already after 23 minutes, the Salzburg team led with goals from Dominik Szoboszlai (16th), Mergim Berisha (19th) and Sekou Koita (23rd) after some hair-raising individual errors in the quick defense at 3-0. Immediately afterwards, a regular Salzburg goal from Zlatko Junuzovic was wrongly denied for offside. In the end, Salzburg celebrated a well-deserved 6-2 victory at this level.
