Head coach Andreas Widhölzl’s Austrian team won the final team competition at the World Ski Flying Championships at Planica (SLO) let’s not fight for medals. The ÖSV quartet with Michael Hayböck, Philipp Aschenwald, Gregor Schlierenzauer and Timon-Pascal Kahofer took sixth place. The Norwegian team became world champion.
The performance of Michael Hayböck can be judged positively, who performed strongly during the weekend and showed consistently good flights. Upper Austria had to content itself with fourth place in individual competition and thus missed its first individual medal at the World Championship. However, Hayböck could hope for his best individual result in a world ski championship. Particularly impressive is the fact that the 29-year-old had recently survived a coronavirus infection and literally got the go-ahead for the World Cup at the last second.
Michael Hayboeck: “Overall it was a very good world ski flying championship for me personally. Only on the day of my arrival could I verify that I am in shape and that I can come here. So it was not really possible to estimate what would happen to me. So I am very positive about the last days and I am happy to have made such strong flights. The season is only really starting for me now and I want to pick up on that as well as I left it here. ”
Philipp Aschenwald: “The conditions made it a really great competition. It was also a lot of fun, although it wasn’t that easy for me. A lot has happened since Wisla, now we hope we can get back to our usual pace and I’m looking forward to the other stations. ”
Head coach Andreas Widhölzl: “Michael has done well for the last four days. It is a shame and bitter that he only finished fourth. Individually it was incredibly exciting and close, you couldn’t afford to make mistakes. It was difficult for us in today’s team competition. Timon is a young jumper, this is his first time and he wanted to do particularly well. Something like that, of course, can happen and in the second round he did very well. ”
Stefan Kraft: “At the moment, it’s still a surprise bag”
World Cup winner Stefan Kraft had to cancel his hopes of a medal at the World Ski Flying Championships early after a training jump to 239 meters on Thursday. His intense pain in his back and groin had turned sharp again. He was absent from the World Cup team competition, as were his two teammates, Daniel Huber and Jan Hörl, who were diagnosed with the Covid-19 virus.
Stefan Kraft: “From a medical point of view, I don’t lack anything and I am healthy. It is simply an inflammation in the pelvic area and therefore a structural overload of the muscles. I will do my best to return to the World Cup soon in a more stable physical condition. But this year I will continue to be a bag of luck and I will always have to see how my body works. I am constantly working to improve the situation. For me, all the essentials on the subject have been said. ”
