Leopoldina experts, including prominent virologist Christian Drosten, had called for strict shutdown measures from December 14 to January 10, in particular extensive business closures and an extension of school holidays, in a position paper Tuesday. On Wednesday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel also campaigned for a tough blockade in Germany and praised Leopoldina’s demands. Public health in Germany is the responsibility of the federal states.
