The Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) on Thursday rejected criticism of LASK coach Dominik Thalhammer for Husein Balic’s injury.
The coach said Wednesday that Balic had returned from the national team with an ankle injury without being informed. ÖFB sporting director Peter Schöttel denied this representation in a statement to the APA.
“After the mandatory medical check-up, the player was released from the field of the national team without injury,” said Schöttel. “It goes without saying that the LASK medical department was informed in detail about all injuries and therapies during the course. We attach great importance to this. Even after the course, there were more communications that are also written.”
The 53-year-old also said: “The assessment of both LASK and ÖFB medical departments on the player’s condition was the same, which can be seen from the fact that the player has played two games for his club. How a player is used after the field and how he develops clinically under the stress of the game at the club is not within the sphere of influence of the ÖFB. “
“It is better to argue internally”
Team boss Franco Foda also showed incomprehension for Thalhammer’s statements. “All the players in the national team are well cared for, we have great doctors and physiotherapists. If I have the feeling that a player should be sick, they will definitely not use him.”
According to Foda, Balic suffered a concussion against Luxembourg on November 11. Four days later, the offensive player against Northern Ireland was not on the squad, which, according to Foda, was because only 23 kickers could be scored on the match sheet. Three days later against Norway Balic was in the squad, but was not used. “He was always fit and always trained,” said the coach.
Communication on the health of players during courses between the ÖFB and the clubs always runs smoothly and to the satisfaction of the German Bundesliga clubs, Foda emphasized. The German pleaded that public speaking should be cautious in the future. “If there are problems, which was not the case for Balic, they should be discussed internally and not made public.”
