During the Christmas holidays: entry restrictions into Austria from December 19

The restrictions apply to people entering Austria from countries with a 14-day incidence of more than 100 (per 100,000 inhabitants). All of Austria’s neighboring countries are currently included. People entering from a risk zone must be quarantined for ten days. Free testing is possible after five days using a PCR test.

Everyone is affected by this regulation, including Austrians abroad who want to spend Christmas with their families. Interior Minister Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) emphasized, however, that it is possible to leave the country before the end of the prescribed quarantine period. “The objective is that we limit the exit as much as possible before the Christmas holidays so that there are no new large-scale infections when he returns,” said the Interior Minister.

German Health Minister Jens Spahn welcomed the quarantine obligation, which is aimed at greatly curbing tourism. Everyone still had the February and March experience in their bones that the virus had been carried to almost every EU country, partly unnoticed by return traffic from ski holidays, Spahn said on Wednesday after a video conference with their EU counterparts.

Skiing is not the problem per se, it is about activities, the German health minister said. In this context, it welcomed the decisions taken by Austria. The government has announced that between mid-December and January 10, people entering from corona risk areas will need to be quarantined for ten days. Free testing is possible after five days using a PCR test. All countries with a 14-day incidence of Corona positive cases greater than 100 are considered risk areas; currently all of Austria’s neighboring countries are included.
