French Formula 1 driver Romain Grosjean remains in hospital one more night as a precaution after his fire accident in Bahrain. The recovery is going according to plan, Haas team boss Günther Steiner said in a video conference on Tuesday. “There was no backtracking.” Originally, a possible discharge was assumed on Tuesday.
Grosjean miraculously only suffered burns to the back of his hand in his accident on Sunday in Sachir, after which he was rushed to hospital. Brazilian Pietro Fittipaldi replaces him in the second Bahrain race this weekend.
I hope to start in Abu Dhabi
Grosjean wants to be in the season finale on December 13. “He’s trying to get back in the car in Abu Dhabi,” Steiner said. “That is now your goal.” Grosjean posted a photo of himself with his hands bandaged on social media channels on Tuesday, but he was already exercising again.
With the burns on his hands, an operation was not possible this weekend, Steiner said. According to his own statement, he is now “in no rush.” A great pair of jeans that the team has to put down at the end of the year “depends on your health.”
About 27 seconds on fire
Steiner also reported some details of the accident. South Tyrol assumes 27 seconds that Grosjean was in the flaming car before he could break free. 53 G forces reportedly acted on the pilot when he collided with the railing. For comparison: in Formula 1 cars, around 5 G acts on the driver when cornering.
Grosjean still remembered getting out of the car, Steiner said. But you are probably not very clear about how you got into this situation.
