Four days after the death of former world star Diego Armando Maradona, Lionel Messi paid tribute to his compatriot on the field with a special celebration. In a 4-0 home win against Osasuna, the Argentine scored the final score and then lifted his shirt to present a red and black jersey with the number 10 of his local club Newell’s Old Boys. Maradona had played five games with the Rosario team in 1993.
Even before the fourth victory in the ninth game of the championship, the Catalans remembered Maradona. Before kick-off, all players gathered for a minute of silence around the center circle, in the center of which was placed a white number 10 in a square with the club’s colors. A Barcelona jersey framed with the number 10 and the original signature of Maradona, who died on Wednesday at the age of 60, was displayed in the stands. “Today in spirit with us,” the Catalans wrote to a photo of himself on Twitter. For the rest, the shirt is exhibited in the club’s own museum at the Camp Nou.
In the next game, Barcelona scored the highest victory of the season in the league. Martin Braithwaite led the home team to the front in the second knee chase (30th). Antoine Griezmann followed with his third goal of the season, a remarkable volley from the rear area, before the break (43rd). Philippe Coutinho (57th) and Messi (73rd) ensured clear success. With one game less, Barcelona are now nine points behind the leader, Real Sociedad, who played at the end of the night.
