Anxious moments after the start of the Bahrain Grand Prix. Romain Grosjean gets under the railing. His car breaks apart and burns in flames.
First things first: Romain Grosjean lives and was escorted to the ambulance in Bahrain, supported by medical personnel. His hands were only slightly burned. According to an initial statement from his Haas F1 team, he was not otherwise injured. Grosjean is airlifted to the hospital and examined more closely.
In view of the images of his accident, this is almost a miracle. The Haas driver flew off the track on the first lap of the final third Formula 1 race. He drove almost without braking towards the railing, his car splitting into two parts. The front part where the Frenchman was still sitting caught fire.
Grosjean was trapped in “flame hell” for exactly 26 seconds before assistants could rescue him from the burning wreckage. As he jumped out of what was left of his car, his left shoe was missing. His assistants, including the racing doctor himself, risked their lives while working. None of them should have been harmed.
Of course, the race was immediately stopped. Depending on how quickly the route can be freed from car parts and the safety of the entire field of drivers can be guaranteed again, it must be continued.

The sports car goes to the background this Sunday. Haas team leader Günther Steiner thanks the medical team: “It’s amazing how quickly they reacted. Thank you!”
