5,802 new corona infections in Austria on Wednesday – Coronavirus Vienna

The effects of the partial and strict blockade in Austria can be seen more and more clearly in the number of infections. There have been 5,802 new SARS-CoV-2 infections in Austria since Tuesday, compared to 6,439 new arrivals. There is positive news from hospitals: 113 fewer patients had to be treated there, but five Covid-19 patients were added to intensive care units. 90 more deaths have been reported since Tuesday.

A total of 4,576 people were hospitalized on Wednesday, 709 of them in intensive care units, according to figures from the Interior and Health Ministry. For the first time since the start of the second wave, the number of hospital patients decreased: on Tuesday there were still 4,689 people in hospitals.

In intensive care units, however, there is still an increase, with 27 patients added last week, which is an increase of four percent. The growth had previously been more than 20 percent.

Last Wednesday 7,091 new infections were reported, today around 5,800. On average, 5,546 new infections were added every day during the past week. The seven-day incidence per 100,000 residents as of Wednesday was 436.2.

There were 68,786 active cases in Austria on Wednesday, 727 fewer than on Thursday. On a weekly average, the number of confirmed active cases decreased by 1,159 per day. Last Friday there were still 76,896 active cases. A similar number of people actively infected as Wednesday this past November 11, 67,057 people were considered active cases in Austria.

30,569 tests were entered into the epidemiological notification system (EMS) in the last 24 hours. With 5,802 new cases, the positive rate was 19 percent; nearly one in five people tested was also infected with SARS-CoV-2. An average of 29,172 tests were recorded daily during the last week and an average of 5,546 were positive, which also corresponds to a positive rate of 19 percent.

Since the start of the pandemic, 260,512 people in Austria have tested positive. 189,059 are considered recovered.

In the case of new infections, however, it should be remembered that the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Health only count the results of PCR tests. In Carinthia, positive antigen tests from suspect case tests on test lanes are not controlled by an additional PCR test. Thus, the southernmost state reported another 98 cases on Wednesday, here rapid antigen tests came back positive.
