More than 18,500 new infections in Germany
6:05 am: In Germany, the number of known infections increases from 18,633 to 961,320. This comes from data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) website.
That was a good 1,000 cases over a week ago. Last Wednesday, the number of new infections reported was 17,561. On Friday, a peak of 23,648 reported cases was reached.
However, the number of new infections is only partially comparable to previous weeks, as the RKI, among other things, has adjusted the recommendations for corona testing as to who should still be tested. The step was necessary as more and more laboratories reached their limits. But the decision could affect the number of new infections, as well as the proportion of positive tests. Read more here.
A new record has been reached for coronavirus-related deaths: 410 more people died from the virus or the virus in 24 hours. The total number of deaths rose to 14,771. The highest level to date was reached in mid-April with 315 deaths reported in one day.
According to RKI’s management report on Tuesday night, the so-called seven-day R was 0.97 (previous day: 0.97). This means that 100 infected people infect almost 100 more people. The value represents the onset of the infection 8 to 16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a long time, the infection process subsides.

Bahn is said to have had a record loss of € 5.6 billion.
03.45 am: According to a newspaper report, the second corona wave is greatly exacerbating Deutsche Bahn’s financial woes. Long-distance trains are currently only used at capacity by an average of 20 percent and regional trains between 55 and 60 percent, writes the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.” This is one of the reasons the federally owned pool is heading for a record loss of € 5.6 billion this year.
The number comes from documents from the December 9 supervisory board meeting, the newspaper reports. During the first half of the year, the railway had reported a loss of 3.7 billion euros.
To make up for the losses, the federal government promised the railroad in the June economic stimulus package a capital increase of five billion euros.
New York Synagogue fined $ 15,000 per wedding
02.15 am: New York authorities have imposed a heavy fine on a synagogue because thousands of guests held a wedding there despite the corona pandemic. The synagogue in the Williamsburg district would have to pay $ 15,000, said New York Mayor Bill de Blasio. Despite the current assembly restrictions, the community invited people to the wedding on November 8 through word of mouth without the knowledge of the authorities.
The event was exposed by a video that circulated on social media that shows thousands of people singing and dancing without masks. New York was the epicenter of the corona pandemic in the United States in the spring. The districts in which Orthodox Jews live were also particularly affected.

SPD Leader Esken For Alternate Lessons: Teachers Demand Clear Line
1.30 am: Ahead of Corona’s main talk on Wednesday, SPD chief Saskia Esken calls for schools to ease up by alternating lessons, that is, class division and alternating learning at home and at school. To make this possible, the federal government has supported the federal states in digitally equipping schools, students and teachers, Esken told Tagesspiegel. “Staggered start and rest times are also recommended, especially to match school transportation.” On school buses, children and young people are “sometimes accommodated like sardines.”
From the point of view of the GEW teachers union, there is still an urgent need to catch up with digitization. Acquisition of end devices suitable for teachers and students must be accelerated, and a digital infrastructure compatible with data protection and sufficient IT system administrators are needed. When it comes to alternate lessons, schools need “a clear announcement” from the federal and state governments on what development of the infection rate classroom lessons should be restricted, union leader Marlis Tepe told the Germany publishing network. . “Until now, unfortunately, politicians have not done so well that it is possible to go from classroom teaching to digital learning without any problem.”

Macron doesn’t want to open winter sports stations until the new year
0.15 am.: Despite a somewhat improved Corona situation in France, President Emmanuel Macron has spoken out against the swift opening of winter sports resorts. The government vote was still in progress, but it seemed impossible to consider opening for the end of the year holidays. That’s what the head of state said Tuesday night in a televised speech.
A reopening in January in good condition is preferable. “We will coordinate this with our European neighbors,” the 42-year-old said. France has major winter sports centers in the Alps and in the Pyrenees.
Before Macron’s remarks, Italy’s push for a later start to the winter sports season in the EU had sparked a dispute between the Alpine countries. Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte wants to keep ski areas closed until at least January 10. Austria reacted with vehement rejection.
