Rector of WU: “You can’t be creative when children are asleep”

In March, many companies were engulfed in the cold water of digital work overnight. What can you advise them now?

Digitization does not happen overnight, it is an organizational development process and generally takes a long time. But you didn’t have that in March. This means that you must now develop an overall strategy and organizational concepts based on previous experience and then implement them. At WU, for example, we have developed digital public meetings in which everyone can participate and discuss. That would not have been possible with physical presence.

Are women particularly slowed down by the crown and lockdown at the company?

Science shows that there is mostly an imbalance between people with care tasks and those without care: it is difficult for men and women with care tasks because they cannot suddenly ignite their creativity and post at night when the children are sleeping Overall, however, research at WU shows that there is a gender-specific division of labor when designing at home. When working from home, women quickly take responsibility for cooking and caring for children, which is a heavy burden.

In university rankings, WU is the second best business university in German-speaking countries. What is missing for the first place?

It would be important to improve the supervision rate. At Oxford there are eleven students for every professor, and at some universities even only four. We are way behind with more than 80 students per habilitation. I hope this argument will be heard in the next performance agreement.
