On Saturday afternoon, Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens) was invited to Ö1 in the Journal. There he spoke with Katja Arthofer about the current crown measures, possible tightening of these, but also a possible resignation of Interior Minister Karl Nehammer (ÖVP).
According to forecasts, the situation in the intensive care units will become critical in eleven days, and then the problems will gradually emerge. “We assume that this current package of measures with the partial blockade will have consequences.” If this is not the case, then you will definitely have to “readjust” and “get more serious.” The general rule of thumb is that everyone should cut their contact lenses in half. It depends on whether the population participates ”.
Fire on the roof
The first thing to do is stabilize the situation and then create a decline, “then we will win this race against time.” Around 420 of the intensive care beds available for COVID patients are currently occupied, the capacity limit hovering around 900. On Friday, they want to assess whether the situation is worsening and then decide whether to toughen measures.
Arthofer also asked if a number of more than 8,000 new infections would be a reason for stricter action (this number was announced shortly after the interview broadcast). Anschober said that if there is a “roof fire” you have to intervene immediately. Schools, kindergartens and retail stores will still be open next week, Anschober says. However, you cannot give any guarantees for the following week.
Nehammer has to resign?
The attack in Vienna could probably have been prevented, as Austrian authorities in Slovakia were informed of an ammunition purchase in July, and an interpreter is said to have warned the terrorist of an imminent Cobra attack. As a result of these findings, calls for the Interior Minister’s resignation are growing stronger, even from the ranks of the Greens in Vienna.
“From my point of view, the most important thing is education,” says Anschober. Only when you have the final report in front of you in black and white will you be able to assess where the errors have occurred. However, parliamentary scrutiny over the protection of the constitution definitely needs to be improved. “I really saw my colleague Nehammer as a good partner in government.”
