Ingenious application to replace corona tests

New application as a hot iron in the fight against the pandemic: it recognizes the virus through AI.

Many experts believe that rapid tests are one of the most important tools in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. And here a breakthrough could have been made. Researchers at the renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed an application that can supposedly determine a Covid-19 infection in a very simple way.

Corona detection based on cough noise

Specifically, the artificial intelligence (AI) equipped smartphone app is supposed to recognize people infected with Corona by the sound of their coughing. The application’s database was “fed” with thousands of cough noises from infected and healthy people. According to lead scientist Juan Brian Subirana, the analysis software is extremely reliable. If everyone uses the app, it can massively slow down the spread of Covid 19, Subirana says. People just have to use the cough test before going to a restaurant, school, or workplace.

The application should recognize the corona infection thanks to the AI by the noise of the cough.

Change in vocal cords

Analysis of disease using cough sounds is not new. There was evidence and analysis about it even before the crisis of the crown. This method has already been used at MIT for the early detection of asthma or pneumonia. These findings have now been used to apply the cough test through software analysis to Covid-19. The virus also affects the vocal cords. Specifically, neuromuscular degradation occurs, which is noticeable when coughing occurs.

Free pre-selection app

The researchers are convinced of their artificial intelligence tool. In tests, the application correctly recognized 98.5 percent of those infected. Therefore, the reliability is significantly higher than that of rapid antigen tests (75%), but their evaluation still takes much longer. That is why the app should get approved as soon as possible. To this end, MIT works with the Japanese Takeda Pharmaceutical Company and several hospitals around the world. The goal is to develop a free and reliable screening app that detects Corona by the smell of a cough. If the app works as well as promised, it could actually help prevent the pandemic from spreading. Which would ultimately be good news for the coronavirus.
