Coronavirus in the US: For the first time, more than 90,000 new infections are reported per day

The White House just released a list of the supposed successes of Donald Trump’s four-year reign. The document from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy states, among other things: “Victory against the Covid-19 pandemic.” Considering the current number of infections, this claim can probably pass for fiction. A few days before the presidential elections in the United States, a record number of new corona virus infections were registered in the country.

As announced by Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore on Thursday (local time), there were 91,295 new cases of infection in 24 hours. This was the first time that the threshold of 90,000 new infections in one day was broken. The Reuters news agency also reported more than 91,000 cases in 24 hours, citing its own estimates.

The previous highest daily value worldwide was 97,894 new infections and was determined on September 17 in India. Johns Hopkins University had the highest daily value for the US on October 23 with 83,731 new infections.

More recently, the new virus has spread particularly in the North and Midwest of the United States. The total number of recorded cases of infection in the United States has now risen to 8.94 million, according to the university. In absolute terms, the United States is the country most affected in the world by the pandemic.

A new blockade is out of the question for Trump

Despite the escalation of the situation, the president of the United States rules out new far-reaching restrictions on public life in the United States. “We will never do a lockdown again,” Trump announced Thursday at a campaign appearance in Tampa, Florida. He also made explicit reference to the restrictions announced in Germany and France.

Trump also says he doesn’t think much of masks as protection against the virus. Anthony Fauci, the president’s top virus adviser and probably the most prominent member of the so-called Corona task force, knows this too. This has come out in favor of a national mask requirement. “If it works, we should do it, yes,” Fauci said in an interview with CNBC. But he doesn’t think it happens at the federal level because “it may not come from the White House.”

The drastic warning from the virus expert

Fauci’s task force warned of the virus’s uncontrolled spread on Thursday. “We are in a very difficult situation. We are going in the wrong direction,” Fauci said Thursday. And also: “If things do not change and develop in this direction, there will be a lot of pain in this country in terms of the number of cases and hospital occupation.

The White House has now captured the strange success report. Communications director Alyssa Farah recently stated that the document was “poorly written.” They just wanted to say that a victory against the virus was the declared goal of the incumbent president. And we are on the right track.
