Old but valuable! Michael Liendl, with his three goals in Wolfsberger AC’s 4-1 win over Feyenoord Rotterdam, has risen to a select group of the oldest triple packers.
At 35 years and four days old, Liendl is now the third-oldest player in Europa League history to achieve a triple pack in this competition. Only superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic and legendary Bilbao striker Aritz Aduriz were older.
Against Feyenoord, Liendl gave WAC the lead with two penalty goals in the first half before tying the game’s triple pack in the 60th minute.
Michael Liendl on his three goals: “That is, of course, exceptional. After I’m no longer 20, that probably won’t happen to me that often either. So I am very, very happy to carry that with me. Of course it is a classic phrase, but that can only be done through equipment. Today we show for more than 90 minutes that we are an incredible team, that we have an excellent team spirit in the team. We all work very, very well. And then something like that happens at the end. “
Liendl “dispenses” with four packages
Liendl could even have scored a four-pack, but left the penalty to teammate Dejan Joveljic to make it 4-1.
The last Austrian before Michael Liendl to score a triple in the European Cup (qualifying matches excluded) was Roland Kollmann in November 2004 for the GAK against Polish club Amica Wronki.
