German lockdown is also difficult for Austrian hoteliers: Vienna coronavirus

The crown lockdown in Germany also hits Austria’s hotel business hard. In western Austria in particular, many hotel spaces are likely to be left empty. In cities, tourism is “down” anyway.

The crown lock in Germany as of November 2 is a serious blow to the national tourism industry. “It is difficult for the western federal states,” Oliver Schenk, spokesman for the Austrian Hotel Association (ÖHV), said Thursday at the APA. Austria’s winter sports resorts are “the only ones where it could still have run”, hotel operations in cities are “on the ground anyway”.

Hotels break overnight stays

If Austria also decides on a quasi-lockdown, and thus the entire month of November is removed, the worst case assumed by the economic research institute (Wifo) in the latest forecast would become the best case, according to Schenk. At worst, Wifo assumed an overnight stay less than 33 percent.

In November 2019, there were 5.3 million overnight stays in Austria, which, according to Schenk, was 3.5 percent of total overnight stays (152.6 million) in the last calendar year.

Travel warning for Austria immediately noted

Local hotels immediately noted the German travel advisory for Austria. On the one hand it is canceled, on the other hand it is not rebooked. “What is needed now is quick help from the government,” the ÖHV spokesman said.
