Minister: The above measures are not effective enough.
Prague / Vienna. In view of the dramatic increase in the number of corona infections, the government of the Czech Republic has imposed a night curfew. As of Wednesday, people will no longer be able to leave their homes between 9 p.m. and 4.59 a.m., as announced by Health Minister Roman Prymula, who is about to leave office, after Monday’s cabinet meeting for the night. The measures taken so far have had little effect, the 56-year-old said.
Since the start of the pandemic, a total of 263,572 corona infections and 2,337 deaths have been recorded in the Czech Republic. Another measure foresees that shops that are still open, such as supermarkets, close on Sundays. For a week and a half, people from the neighboring country have been asked to stay home if possible. However, there are numerous exceptions to exit restrictions, such as commuting, sports, and shopping. The state of emergency has been in force in the Czech Republic since the beginning of October. It allows the government to restrict civil rights.
The Czech Republic, with its nearly 10.7 million inhabitants, is particularly affected by the corona pandemic. According to the EU health agency ECDC, 1,284.4 people per 100,000 inhabitants were infected in 14 days. That was the highest value among all EU member states. During the same period, 10.2 people died for every 100,000 inhabitants.
