American tennis player Sam Querrey and his family from St. Petersburg organized a getaway as if out of a movie. The 33-year-old escaped quarantine at the player’s hotel, left town on a private jet, and is currently at an undisclosed location with his wife and eight-month-old son. Ten times winner of the ATP tournament and number 49 in the world. now he threatens a hefty fine and suspension.
Querrey wanted to play the ATP 500 tournament in St. Petersburg, but was withdrawn from the tournament earlier than the first individual due to a positive test for coronavirus. This meant two weeks of quarantine for him and his family, at least in a luxury hotel in St. Petersburg. Querrey assumed this as well.
But when the Russian health authorities showed up and threatened to be taken to a hospital (due to mild symptoms), the family fled. They sneaked out of the hotel, secretly arrived at the airport, and finally took a private jet to a nearby country, where entry was possible without a negative coronavirus test.
They keep the whereabouts of the Querreys a secret, all three tested positive. Querrey gives as a reason for not wanting to cause problems with the local authorities. The ATP sees Querrey’s escape as a “serious violation of the rules.” Now a fine of up to 100,000 euros or a suspension could be imposed. Querrey did not nominate for the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, but still wanted to play in the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Paris-Bercy (as of November 2).
