Corona: British opposition calls for temporary closure

British opposition leader Keir Starmer has called for a two to three week lockdown on Britain due to the growing number of new corona infections. Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s administration on Tuesday accused Starmer of “losing control” and ignoring the advice of his scientific advisers. Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the government had not implemented all the measures out of consideration for the economic impact.

Starmer called for a shutdown to contain the spread of the virus. This is an opportunity to correct the mistakes of the government. “If we follow the science and break the cycle, we can control this virus,” Starmer said. “If we don’t do that, a long, bleak winter awaits us.”

Johnson was last under pressure when details of actions recommended by the government’s scientific advisory panel were revealed. The prime minister had only implemented one of the five recommended points and asked people to work from home. A spokesman for the prime minister defended this decision on Tuesday: the experts themselves had warned that the economic consequences should also be taken into account.

Labor Minister Therese Coffey rejected the opposition’s demands. Currently, a nationwide lockdown is not a problem.

The UK has so far recorded more than 43,000 coronavirus-related deaths. The number of corona patients admitted to the hospital is currently higher than at the time of the first closure on March 23.
