Under the slogan “Hello, speed”, Apple belatedly invited to the annual iPhone event. The focus was on four new models and a mini smart speaker.
In 2007, the iPhone reshaped the understanding of smartphones. 13 years later, Apple devices have grown well beyond the 3.5-inch limit. Sticking to just one model has long been a thing of the past. With the iPhone 12, Apple is now announcing the 5G era after the Android makers.
The focus of the new iPhones is clearly 5G. Apple promises download speeds of up to 3.5 gigabits per second. But also more security. Because with 5G it is less necessary to dial in public access points. Data hunger for the new mobile communications standard should be reduced by turning on 5G only when it is really needed. For less data-intensive services, there should be an automatic switch to LTE (4G).
The well-known A14 Bionic from the iPad Air 4, which is manufactured in a 5-nanometer process, is used as the SoC (System on a Chip) for both 12-series iPhones. It has two high-performance cores and four for power saving.
Tried and tested design with new technology
The angular design of the iPhone 12 series is reminiscent of the iPhone 4 / 4S or 5 series. Instead of Corning’s Gorilla Glass, Apple uses a ceramic coating for strength. This should make the cell phone up to four times more likely to survive a fall unscathed.
The main model that iPhone 12, offers a 6.1-inch screen. The device is eleven percent thinner and 16 percent lighter than its predecessor. For the display, Apple relies on an OLED panel, which receives its own brand as Super Retina XDR. With a brightness of 1200nits, it promises not to be influenced by direct sunlight. It supports HDR, Dolby Vision and HDR10.
That was the surprise of the night iPhone 12 Mini. Apple is the only manufacturer that has known how to bring a smaller version to market without having to compromise on technical features. At 5.4 inches it’s still not small, but it’s a lot easier to use with one hand. A welcome change from the best models of the competition, which almost all scratch the seven-inch mark. If it’s still too big for you, the iPhone SE (4.7-inch) is an even smaller alternative.
The focus of the devices is also on Apple’s cameras. The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini have a dual camera, each with 12 megapixels (wide angle and ultra wide angle). However, you have to do without a telephoto lens and the LiDAR scanner for depth perception introduced in the Pro model.
Another thing in common: MagSafe. Apple now also offers cases with a magnetic holder called Magsafe. This allows iPhones to charge with 14 watts.
The memory sizes are 64, 128 and 256 GB (not 512 GB), the prices in the United States are 799 and 699 dollars (without taxes).
Both devices are available in black, white, green, red, and blue. Devices can now be reserved. The iPhone 12 should be available from October 23. The Mini won’t be available until mid-November, as will the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Pro models
the iPhone 12 Pro grows from 5.8 to 6.1 inches. The Pro Max was also put back on the shelf and now offers a 6.7-inch screen diagonal. Care was taken to ensure that the external dimensions of the device did not change; the consequence is a narrower aluminum frame. As with the smaller models, an OLED panel is used. A new triple camera and LiDAR scanner, which debuted on the iPad Pro, are used in the two new Pro models. This allows 3D spaces to be captured and transformed into augmented reality. It also controls autofocus in low light.
In the iPhone 12 Pro Max In addition to the triple camera, there is also a five times optical zoom with a larger sensor. A new professional photography format has been developed: the AppleProRaw format. It should arrive on devices later in the year via a software update. The video feature has also been successfully updated. The iPhonePro can now record DolbyVision movies in professional format.
The two models are available in 128, 256 and 512 gigabytes of memory. US prices are $ 999 for the iPhone 12 Pro and Max, which like the Mini, won’t be available until mid-November, at $ 1099 and up.

In the interest of sustainability, Apple wants to try to reduce packaging and scope of delivery in the future. And since most of them already have an adapter plug or charging cable and headphones, these are not included in the delivery.
The Home Pod Mini
The first Siri speaker for the home was difficult for the successful company. Because the speaker really didn’t want to take off. The Mini should fix it now. The $ 100 device is now a sphere instead of a cylinder. With a height of only 8.4 centimeters, it fits in the living room without attracting attention. An interesting detail: the Home Pod Mini works with the same processor as the Apple Watch. Depending on the workplace and music, the sound should adapt automatically – Apple calls it Computational Audio. There are three microphones available on demand.
When it comes to music streaming services, Apple remains only partially restricted: In addition to its own streaming service, Amazon Music, TuneIn, and other services are also supported. However, Spotify does not appear on the list.
The dial, which will be offered in black and white, also comes with an intercom function. This allows the HomePods to be used for internal communication and to send messages to specific speakers, or everyone in the house.
A feature that was first announced in full for the first time last year is yet to come in German-speaking countries: voice recognition. The presentation showed how different users can make Siri announce their individual appointments.
