And again! After two match days in the 2020/21 season, David Wagner’s training time at Schalke 04 has ended.
The surprise is limited: Schalke have not won in every season for 18 straight Bundesliga games. In the two games of the new season it was 0: 8 against Bayern Munich and 1: 3 at the peak of crisis against Werder Bremen.
Wagner’s assistant coach Christoph Bühler and Frank Fröhling also have to leave the club. A successor for the 48-year-old has yet to be named. In hearsay, Marc Wilmots is the name of a Schalke legend. Former Mainz Sandro Schwarz, former Augsburg Manuel Baum and former Stuttgart Alexander Zorniger are also listed as candidates.
“The decision is not easy”
“We all hoped to achieve sporting change together with David Wagner. Unfortunately, the first two days of play of the new season did not produce the necessary performance and results,” said Jochen Schneider, member of the Schalke Sports and Communication Board, in a short summary. Statement.
“We have decided to go down the road to a new beginning in terms of personnel. This decision was not at all easy for us, despite disappointing results.” His thanks go to the released trio of coaches, who did everything possible every day “to get Schalke 04 back on the track of success.”
Only three coaches fired so early
Wagner is only the fourth coach in the 58th Bundesliga season after Rinus Michels (Cologne 1983), Morten Olsen (Cologne 1995) and Dieter Hecking (Hannover 2009), who was sacked after matchday two.
Wagner, who was a professional at Schalke from 1995 to 1997, still had a contract until 2022. Never in the history of the Bundesliga has a team started worse than Schalke with zero points and 1:11 goals in two games.
Strong until January
In mid-January in Gelsenkirchen, they cheered on the coach who had been hired in the summer. After beating Gladbach 2-0 at the start of the second half of the season, Schalke were fifth, tied on points with archrival Dortmund and three points behind second-placed Bayern. Wagner seemed to have understood and revived Schalke.
Schalke have not won a match since. After the 0: 8 start at Bayern Munich, Schneider had already moved away from Wagner and had no longer given a job guarantee.
Immediately after 1: 3 against Bremen with an equally sobering performance, the sporting director did not want to say anything. Wagner had to be clear, at the latest, what awaited him.
