The Dacia Vikings Vienna were declared champions of the Austrian Football League (AFL) on Saturday. In the final match against Projekt Spielberg Graz Giants, the Viennese celebrated their third victory in the third game with a 46:29 (27:13) and won the final series “Best of Five” early. It is the 15th championship title for record champions.
After a balanced first game (31:19), the Vikings dominated in the second game (45:13) and were able to continue this performance in the third game. In front of 300 spectators at the sports facilities on Ravellinstrasse, the hosts took the lead for 59 yards on their first drive with a touchdown from catcher Yannick Mayr following a pass from quarterback Jadrian Alexander Clark and never gave up.
The Graz team, which had traveled with their new quarterback Anthony Gargner after an injury to Hunter McEachern, remained in close contact throughout the game, but the Viennese always had the right answer. Clark threw five touchdown passes, Mayr caught three for the Viennese, who were able to ascend to the AFL throne for the first time since 2017. Graz has to wait for the first title since 2008.
Mayr continues with his second touchdown
The AFL season should have taken place in the spring, but it fell victim to the coronavirus pandemic. Ultimately, only two named teams, all others like last year’s winner, Swarco Raiders, decided not to participate in the league this season.
Voices for the game:
Chris calaycay (Vikings coach): “I am grateful for the opportunity to play at this very special time. Thanks especially to the Giants, because without them we couldn’t have played this series. Today we played a bit too ‘sloppy’, we received too many flags, but we showed our strength both in attack and defense when the time came. “
Martin Kocian (Giants coach): “I’m very proud of my team because we did our best and we fought to the end. It was not enough for a championship with this young team, but we will learn from him. “
