When do the overnight inns have to end in view of the high number of new corona infections? Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens) supports the initiative of the three western federal states to carry the curfew from 1:00 am to 10:00 pm from Friday initially for three weeks. Vienna and Lower Austria, on the other hand, are initially against an earlier curfew despite the higher number of new infections in the federal state comparison.
Anschober let the “Wiener Zeitung” know that it was “the express wish” of the states of Vorarlberg, Tirol and Salzburg to be able to implement a curfew from 10 pm “for prevention reasons”. The government supports the countries in this.
The countries’ top politicians are under pressure for various reasons. In western Austria, the curfew is from 10pm to save the following winter season and avoid further travel warnings such as those issued by the Netherlands for Innsbruck due to corona infections.
The Minister of Economy, Margarete Schramböck (ÖVP), also defended it with this argument: “Now we must take measures so that winter tourism is not in danger.” Of course, the hotelier association’s call for compensation for the previous curfew is already on the table.
Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz also recommended that Vienna and Lower Austria should close the curfew earlier. The mayor of Vienna, Michael Ludwig (SPÖ), is in the middle of campaigning for the municipal council elections on October 11. Closing bars in the big city earlier would massively alienate younger voters. Ludwig officially justified his not, preferring guests at pub tables to long uncontrolled private parties.
Lower Austria does not exclude regional rules
Lower Austria, dominated by the ÖVP, has surrendered. The fixed journal of the Corona crisis team will discuss this on Friday. Health Councilor Ulrike Königsberger-Ludwig (SPÖ) refers to the crisis team, which now does not consider an earlier curfew necessary. Furthermore, the federal state cannot be compared to Vorarlberg. Earlier closing times in the region are not excluded. Krems, where there is a cluster, is considering it.
