By Friday morning the time had come: the Corona traffic light in the Zwettl district changed from yellow (“medium risk”) to orange (“high risk”). The Corona Commission met on Thursday night to assess the epidemiological development of recent days. The risk of transmission, traceability of transmission chains, testing activity and the use of resources of the hospitals were examined, NÖN reported.
As of September 18 at 11 am, 130 positive cases had occurred in the district since it was registered. The number of corona cases increased recently, with 38 new known cases in the last week alone. What does the stoplight switch mean for the district now? Is there any measure that should be implemented in the municipalities?
Questions that are currently difficult to answer, says Maximilian Igelsböck, district president of the association of municipalities. Currently there is much uncertainty among mayors: “The statements of the federal government are very vague. We suffer that there are no clear guidelines, that does not create a good mood in the communities.” Local bosses are used to having clear rules that they can follow. This is not the case with the traffic light change: “The traffic light jumps to orange and in principle nothing changes. That is terrible. It is not satisfactory for us that there is no clear communication.”
Currently, only the crown measures applicable at the national level are linked to the traffic light. In addition, the Traffic Light Commission recommends following the following aspects on the Orange website:
- Intensification of the protection of healthcare centers and hospitals.
- Increase in screening tests in relevant areas (nursing and health centers, high-risk companies, educational areas, etc.)
- Protection of the elderly in intergenerational family associations
- Preventive measures in certain places such as markets
- Restrict events in closed companies without a security concept
According to the commission, no further measures are necessary in the field of events or in the education sector.
Igelsböck wants regional measures
Mayor Maximilian Igelsböck was unable to assess whether the traffic light switch is justified for the district. “There are contradictory opinions on this. However, it would be desirable for it to be divided into regions or communities.” There were only two cases of corona 14 days ago in his community in Groß Gerungs, and one last week. “We hardly have any cases here. The Waldviertel Highlands region is not an access point,” says Igelsböck.
More details and updates will be available here and in the print edition starting Wednesday.
