It was one of the shortest Apple events to date. Just one hour and four minutes after Apple boss Tim Cook started the online presentation, he said goodbye again. In between, however, there were 64 minutes of entertainment with high-speed devices, in which the Apple manager introduced a number of new products and services.
However, Cook made it clear that iPhones wouldn’t be there 130 seconds after the show started when he said the focus will be on the Apple Watch and iPad today. So you will have to wait a little longer for the new iPhones and the first Macs with Apple processors.
But even so, it was anything but boring what the iPhone company showed tonight without an iPhone. And not so much because the new Apple Watch Series 6 has a sensor that can determine in just 15 seconds how high the blood oxygen value of the person using the Apple Watch is. Manufacturers of other smart watches have been offering this feature for a long time.
Apple Watch: always keep an eye on the kids
What other manufacturers don’t have is a feature that Apple calls “family settings.” Behind this is the possibility of configuring the Apple Watch of other family members through iPhone. For example, parents should use this to configure their children’s smart watches.
The possibilities are fascinating and terrifying at the same time. With an Apple Watch set up this way, you can not only send messages to the child, but also locate their location. If you want, you can go one step further and be automatically informed if the child has arrived at certain places on certain days and at certain times: Has he been on time to school in the morning, to the sports club in the afternoon, to a friend’s house at night? Of course, you can also disable all this.
In any case, Apple recommends making the basic adjustments together with the future watch user so that he or she can help determine what data should be revealed by your watch. Basically, the feature is available to everyone who is grouped by family sharing, and grandparents can also be invited to do so. In principle, the familiar configuration can also be used with the Series 4 Apple watches, so not only with the new models. An LTE module is a prerequisite for this to work.
The professional: the new iPad Air
At first glance, the new iPad Air looks like an iPad Pro, as it is shaped the same and you can now use the Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard, which were previously reserved for expensive professional models.
What makes it really special, however, is that it is the first device that Apple’s new A14 Bionic processor will do its job on, which is also planned for upcoming iPhones. With its 11.8 billion transistors, it leaves the next-generation iPhone A13 Bionic, which is equipped with 8.6 billion transistors, far behind and should provide a powerful boost in performance.
A comparison with the chips installed in the current iPad Pro is not so trivial. Its A12Z chip also has more than 10 billion transistors. Ultimately, only direct comparisons will be able to show whether an iPad Air with the new chip is truly superior to an iPad Pro with the old chip and, if so, by how much.
Only with restrictions: Apple One
In addition to hardware, it became clear once again how much Apple cares about keeping its customers in its ecosystem. After iCloud, Apple Music, Apple TV + and Apple Arcade, now follows Fitness +. The new offering is meant to make exercise-hungry users sweat with video workouts running on iPhone or iPad and Apple Watch in parallel. In Germany, the home sports offer will not be available at the moment. Before you can start, the appropriate training videos must first be filmed or Germanized in German.
And Apple One, Apple’s new combined service subscription, is currently only available in savings versions in this country. You can reserve the full package of Apple Music, Apple TV +, Apple Arcade and 50 GB of iCloud storage from autumn for 15 euros per month for individuals or 20 euros per month for the whole family. In the US, Apple also offers a variant with two terabytes of cloud storage, but this cannot be available in Germany because this offer also includes Apple News + and Fitness +, which are not available here. It’s unclear when that will change, but it could take a while.
What won’t take long, though, is that Apple will add another one after the high-speed show Tuesday night, which will likely only be about iPhones and their accessories. Apple, of course, keeps a secret about when it will take place. It should be from early to mid October. Then the factories will be able to deliver the first million copies of the new smartphones.
