Although the number of infections in Vienna is increasing, the federal capital has again been rated yellow.

VIENNA. Mayor Michael Ludwig, Health Councilor Peter Hacker (both SPÖ) and the medical director of the Vienna Health Association, Michael Binder, spoke today, Friday, September 11, at a press conference on the rise in infections by Covid-19 in Vienna and presented new measures. The day before, Hacker called for stricter measures by the federal government and the possibility of stipulating the necessary rules of the game at the regional level.

In August, most younger people between the ages of 20 and 35 were affected by infections, but today it also affects older people. “We see that now not only young people are affected, but older people have also been infected in recent days, so we are tightening the measures,” said Mayor Ludwig.

Vienna demands stricter rules

On the recommendation of the crisis team of the city of Vienna, the following measures are required:

  • Even if it is only needed from the red light, Vienna will continue routine corona tests before admissions to hospitals and nursing homes.
  • Mouth and nose protection mandatory when buying in all stores.
  • In gastronomy, diners must wear mouth and nose protection on the way through the restaurant to the table. There should also be a mask requirement at the bar. These rules of the game should also apply in the event area (canteens on the sports field, theater, etc.)
  • In the world of work, it is necessary to be aware of the rules of the game in social spaces.
  • There should be a regulation for “closed events” in restaurants, clubs, etc.

These can only be implemented when the legal basis for this has been created. “I can live with that when these rules of the game apply across the country. Otherwise, we want the basics to be able to implement these rules of the game in Vienna, ”Hacker said.

The city has already extended access restrictions in hospitals and nursing homes. Vienna is also planning special regulations for markets and expanding the requirement for masks in official buildings. There, mouth and nose protection is also applied in the corridors.

Measures at the national level as of Monday

The federal government has announced that some of the necessary measures will be implemented throughout Austria from Monday, September 14 (midnight):

  • Customers must wear mouth and nose protection in all stores.
  • Catering industry employees should wear mouth and nose protection, and hospitality should only take place in seats.
  • For events without assigned seats, the following applies: max. 50 people inside and 100 people outside. At major events with assigned seating, 1,500 people can be allowed inside and 3,000 outside.

These measures can be legally anchored in the short term with a change to the COVID-19 Relaxation Ordinance. Only with the amendment of the Epidemic Law and the Covid-19 Measures Law can all the rules of the four color levels of the traffic light of Corona be decided, this will only be the case on September 23.

“The pandemic is not over. We have to prepare measures that are feasible and understandable, ”says the medical director of the health network, Michael Binder. What everyone can do immediately to minimize risk: Keep your distance, wear masks when necessary, don’t forget about hand hygiene, and exercise common sense.
