Between haute couture and masks

Mandatory mask throughout the event area, automatic fever checks at the entrance, and baby elephants thanks to assigned chessboard-style seating always with you: Vienna Fashion Week, held for the 12th time in the Neighborhood of the Museums this year, wishes to send a positive signal despite the corona pandemic and offer a stage to Austrian and international (young) designers.

What all these measures mean for visitors and employees should be shown for the first time at the opening show on Monday night. Each host had to be previously accredited by means of a crown sheet, so that in case of disease, they could react quickly and the chains of infection could be evaluated. Fever measurement stations were also installed at the entrance of the tent, which automatically measure the temperature as you pass, and inner masks are mandatory for all visitors, even during shows.

Topless on the catwalk

This year there will be no free choice of seats, nor will there be a crowd in front of the entrance. Seating is based on the “first come, first serve” principle and is also part of the expertly developed corona prevention concept. “We do not want anyone to get sick,” clarify organizers Maria Oberfrank, Zigi Mueller-Matyas and Elvyra Geyer. The fact that this time only 400 people instead of nearly 1000 in previous years will be able to see Fashion Week live in the tent at the same time is something that is gladly accepted.

Backstage is also very different this year. Just like guests, designers, models, and makeup artists must also wear masks, the latter have also been tested beforehand. The mouth and nose protection can only be removed on the catwalk, unless it is already part of the collection. For health reasons, the track is also not at ground level this year, but it has been raised a bit.

Cohesion sign

For a long time it was doubtful that Fashion Week could take place. “We worked to achieve it for months without knowing if we could really do it now,” the organizers confirm. However, driving only in the middle of Fashion Week was never an option. Completely or not at all, was the motto of the trio of women. The last step occurred at the same time as the Corona traffic light last Friday. The fact that it is now bright yellow for Vienna has no longer influenced the preparations. The prevention concept was presented and approved before the official traffic lights were turned on, and visitors have already been voluntarily limited to 400 people.

According to the motto “You have to experience fashion”, it is especially important for young designers that their designs are not only shown on paper, but also live. Therefore, this year’s show is mainly under the sign of the cohesion of the fashion industry, which has been greatly affected by the crown crisis.
