Corona traffic light: Linz continues to criticize, government tries to calm down

“Compared with the population of Linz, only one in 4,000 is infected. This again shows that the yellow classification at the traffic light in Corona is not justified,” Linz Mayor Klaus Luger (SP) renewed his criticism on Sunday.

Health Minister Rudi Anschober announced a legally binding ordinance, as reported, on Friday. Until then, the extension of oral and nasal protection to all businesses should be implemented in a legally binding manner (currently a “yellow” measure). Anschober called for a halt to the “fights” in connection with the lighting of the traffic light, and also made changes in the room: there could be “more specific boundaries” and not only at the district level. In doing so, he responded to criticism from Tyrolean Governor Günther Platter (VP) that there were a very different number of infections in the Kufstein district, which is classified as “yellow.” Above all, passenger flows and the effects of tourism are gradually being incorporated into the assessment even further, according to Anschober. The virological situation throughout Austria will be thoroughly reviewed next week.

Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (vice president) also tried to calibrate: the yellow switch was “not to blame”, it was sensible to see the traffic light as a “prevention instrument”.

The opposition announced resistance to the new Covid-19 law, which the coalition intends to pass in the National Council on September 23. In the Federal Council, FP and SP could block the law for eight weeks.

The comments

The Crown Commission scored very differently when assigning the traffic light colors:

  • Linz (yellow / medium risk): The cumulative incidence of 7 days (cases of infection) shows a decrease from 32 to 26 per 100,000 inhabitants. 62% of the newly identified cases could be clarified as to their source.
  • Graz (also yellow / medium risk): The 7-day incidence shows an increase from 21 to 31 per 100,000 inhabitants. In the newly identified cases, 34 percent could be clarified regarding their source.
  • Wiener Neustadt (green / low risk): The 7-day incidence shows a jump from 22 to 44 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Among the newly infected, 58 percent of the cases could be clarified as to their origin.
  • Innsbruck (green / low risk): The 7-day incidence shows a decrease from 43 to 33 per 100,000 inhabitants, the source of which could be clarified in 71 percent of new cases.

The utilization of intensive care beds in Upper Austria is given as 0.8 percent.
