Cycle lanes decide Match um Wien instead of Corona – Wien

Politically, Corona is not a problem in the Vienna elections. The parties also had to accept that. But the trails and bike lanes could be more decisive.

The political issues in the Vienna elections are broad. “Today” has conducted the largest survey to date in cooperation with TV station ATV (Unique Research, 1,600 respondents, fluctuation range ± 2.4 percent) sent to the field. As pollster Peter Hajek observed, participating parties hardly score on very different issues. For SPÖ voters, health and life are in the foreground, FPÖ, ÖVP and Strache voters rely on immigration and integration, green voters on transportation and climate protection, and voters from NEOS in education.

What is surprising is that the Corona crisis hardly plays a political role, at least among voters. A full two-thirds say the city of Vienna has the pandemic well under control and that they wouldn’t care about Corona (26 percent “very” agree, 40 percent “somewhat” agree). Only one in ten (ten percent) stated that they “disagree” with this statement, 22 percent said “less” and two percent said “I don’t know.”

It is noteworthy that the topic of walking and biking trails is much more divisive. 45 per cent (24 per cent “very”, 21 per cent “most likely”) and 51 per cent oppose (22 per cent “less”, 29 per cent) whether in the future in Vienna bicycle and pedestrian paths should take priority over roads in planning and expansion “Not at all”). Four percent refrain from answering the question. So does this question help determine the choice? Possible. The issue of traffic is particularly important to at least 15 percent of voters.

“The Viennese are very calm about COVID-19,” says Hajek. “The ÖVP must have realized that too, because criticism of Vienna has decreased in this regard.” When it comes to cycling, “the front lines are clearly drawn”: Greens against FPÖ and ÖVP. What is still remarkable: the SPÖ, as the presumed winner of the elections, can apparently stand completely on the sidelines and does not have to “offend” neither its supporters nor its opponents.
