There are very different testing and quarantine obligations for people returning from Europe. The EU Commission now wants to end this mess of rules and, among other things, shorten the quarantine time.
In the fight against the confusion of crown-related travel restrictions, the EU Commission has put forward specific proposals to member states. The Brussels concept of authority aims to agree common criteria and thresholds for the introduction of travel restrictions as soon as possible. It also proposes the creation of a map of EU risk areas and uniform rules for travel to risk areas. Until now, for example, there have been very different testing and quarantine obligations for people returning from a trip.
Health ministers from EU countries agreed on Friday to shorten the quarantine period after traveling from risk areas to ten days. Health Minister Jens Spahn announced this in the afternoon. Until now, the quarantine has generally lasted 14 days. He could well imagine that the ten days could also apply to Germany, Spahn said. It is being verified to reduce this to five days in case of a negative corona test.
Germany wants to push to align the rules
If the proposals of the EU Commission are implemented, and if so, it is now a matter for the member states. According to information from EU circles, Germany intends to promote the issue intensively in the course of its current presidency of the EU Council in the coming weeks. According to an agreement between representatives of the member states, the focus will initially be on the comparability of epidemiological data and better communication of restrictions.
Due to differences in the EU and predominantly national competences, closer coordination even in these two areas will require great joint efforts, said an EU diplomat. It becomes clear that the discussion on the other issues will become much more complicated due to the different starting conditions in the EU member states.
Until now, each country has decided for itself and according to its own criteria which other countries or regions of the EU it classifies as a risk zone. For example, the federal government cautions against traveling to Spain, Brussels, or certain areas of France. People coming to Germany from risk areas must take a corona test and, if necessary, comply with quarantine requirements.
