Chancellor Kurz had indicated that there could be a further tightening of the crown’s measures. This has led to recommendations for the fall.
The government discussed measures to combat the corona pandemic in the first ordinary Council of Ministers after the summer holidays. Contrary to expectations, Turquoise-Green has not agreed to tighten. Instead, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) made three recommendations in the press lobby after the Council of Ministers:
- Keep distance and following Hygienic measures they are crucial in the cold season.
- Wear mouth and nose protection: “The more our social life shifts inward, the more important it is that we wear the mask more where we can’t keep our distance,” Kurz said.
- Private celebrations should be done “with common sense”Especially in regards to Christmas. Specifically, the government recommends a maximum of 25 participants.
Then Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler (Greens) added a caveat: One is sure a second lockdown can be avoided, but fall and colder temperatures will do the virus good. Because when you hug yourself, “the virus embraces you”, so the well-known motto remains: “The greatest possible freedom and the few necessary restrictions”.
Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens) presented the current figures as the third speaker at the press conference: As of Wednesday morning, there were 327 new infections and 255 new arrivals, resulting in 3,415 actively ill people. The numbers are “too high for the time, but not dramatic,” Anschober stressed. They can be explained primarily by returning travelers and initial steps. There is currently a focus on clustering with private celebrations, hence the new recommendation for up to 25 participants.
Lastly, Interior Minister Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) urged vigilance. He described a meeting with a police commander who was “flagged” for Covid-19. This made him, Nehammer, aware of the importance of wearing masks and distance. Quarantine measures are not an easy decision and are strictly controlled. The minister said: “Anyone who violates this rule can expect sanctions. The police are willing to tighten controls, both in uniform and in civilian clothes.”
