A virus that shakes the world. This is how you could describe the last six months in the province of Salzburg. On February 29, almost half a year ago, the first coronavirus infection was confirmed in Salzburg. We take a look back.
To date, on Friday (at 4:30 p.m.) there have been 1,640 coronavirus infections, and 164 people are actively infected in the country. This value was last seen in Salzburg at the end of April. 39 people have died so far and 1,428 have recovered. So far, more than 57,000 officially ordered tests have been performed, plus around 28,200 smears as part of the tourism assessment, which will be expanded from September.
The Corona traffic light is used
“Even after half a year, which may seem longer due to the intensity, we know one thing for sure: the virus is still among us and we have to live with it,” said Lieutenant Governor Christian Stöckl (ÖVP), who gave insight . in autumn: “I think we are well prepared because we have learned a lot and can react quickly. The hospitals are well set up and the warehouses with protective equipment are full enough and will be stocked.”
According to Stöckl, Salzburg will implement the federal crown traffic light to be able to react depending on the district and the situation.
Has the Salzburg strategy been tried?
State Medical Director Petra Juhasz has focused on the health of the population from day one. The strategy for this has not fundamentally changed: “It is still important to contain the spread of the disease in the best possible way. This includes isolating infected people and their close contacts. This is how we manage to control clusters. But everything we do As authorities and as doctors it becomes obsolete if the individual does not help “, Juhasz appeals and repeats the basic rules for everyone:” Wash your hands, keep your distance, also in the private sector. That would help us enormously in autumn because it also prevents other diseases that are transmitted by droplets and do not overload the health system ”.
There have been days in the last six months that have stuck in my memory, like the early end of the winter season when the cable cars closed on March 15th. Or the Easter weekend in mid-April, which was so completely different than usual … March 25 will also be remembered when the first patient died of Covid-19 in Salzburg. The day with the most new infections was March 26, April 2 reached the highest number of people actively infected with 833. The most officially ordered tests were April 29, in 1,443, and April 10, 78 people they recovered in a day.
The age of the infected has changed
While Pinzgau and Pongau were the worst hit in spring, the coronavirus has meanwhile “migrated” to the central area. There are currently 30.8 people infected per 100,000 inhabitants in the state of Salzburg, the city of Salzburg with 41.3 and Flachgau with 53.4 are well above this value. The age of those infected has also changed, they are getting younger and younger. The largest group is currently 15 to 34 years old, a few months ago it was 35 to 54 years.
The number of affected communities is increasing
Rapid contact tracing to break chains of infection and contain clusters as quickly as possible – this is an important goal that authorities and medical professionals have in common. “It seems to focus more on local outbreaks,” says Gernot Filipp of the Salzburg State Statistics. The number of affected communities has decreased over time. For example, on March 29 there were 95, on May 29 only six, by August 28 the number had increased to 35 again.
