According to data published by the Ministry of Health, there have been no new infections in 33 of 94 districts for 14 days. Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Grne) rejects a “traffic light system” as in Germany. If all goes well, the opening could accelerate from June.
At a press conference on Thursday, Anschober announced that the situation in the first half of June should be thoroughly examined. “If it is a good result, it could speed up opening efforts,” the minister said.

There is no “traffic light system”
However, the minister rejected a regional “traffic light system” as in Germany at the request. The Robert Koch Institute has proposed a traffic light system for Germany. Consequently, there should be regional restrictions if weekly new infections in a district exceed 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. At the moment, that traffic light would be green in most Austrian districts. Because in only twelve of the 94 districts, the number of new confirmed infections per 10,000 inhabitants is more than one. Most of them are, due to numerous infections in a nursing home, in the Werian district in Styria (29 new infections or 3.2 per 10,000 inhabitants), in Horn (8 cases or 2.6 per 10,000 inhabitants) and in Vienna (368 or 1.9 per 10,000 inhabitants).
However, in the vast majority of districts, the infection rate is less than 1 and, therefore, in the green range, in 33 districts no new infections have been reported in the past 14 days.

Whereas in Germany decisions on regional restrictions must be made on the basis of such categories, the Minister of Health Anschober rejects a traffic light system for Austria. It is a politically defined limit. The system also suggests that anything below the limit is not a problem.
Therefore, Austria will continue to take action every 14 days. With regional herds of infection one has to intervene regionally. However, this is based on cluster analysis, evaluations and control measures and not on a traffic light system: “I don’t think it is a good example for Austria.”
Fewer than 1000 people with active disease
On Thursday, for the first time since March 16, the number of 1,000 people currently suffering from SARS-CoV-2 in the country was undermined. So far, there have been a total of 15,980 positive results across the country.
234 people were hospitalized for the coronavirus, 54 of whom were in intensive care units. As on the previous day, not a single sick person had to be treated at the Vorarlberg hospital, and the number of hospitalized patients remained low in Krnten (two) and Burgenland (three).
A new case in Upper Austria
51 new cases were reported from Vienna from Wednesday to Thursday. A spokesman for the city’s crisis management team explained this increase, which has been higher than in recent days, saying it mainly affects people of family origin who are already infected.
Except in the federal capital, there was an increase in active patients only in Upper Austria, where there was exactly one new case. Currently, only 27 people are sick, 13 of whom are in a normal hospital ward and three in an intensive care unit. 255 people were still in quarantine on Thursday afternoon.
81-year-old Linz man dies
The number of people who died in or with coronavirus rose to 60 on Thursday. An 81-year-old Linz man with previous illnesses died at Kepler University Hospital.
The number of new infections has changed only slightly since the initial restrictions were largely lifted on May 1. Every day a few new cases are reported from the old “Crown Bastion” Tyrol. Only in the metropolis of Vienna and Lower Austria do the daily increases, as well as the number of people recovering, sometimes in double digits.
So far, 626 people in Austria have died of a disease with or with Covid-19. The number of victims increased by two from Wednesday to Thursday after two deaths were reported from Lower Austria.
