“Very serious situation” – China again imposes restrictions on individual cities
The | Reading time: 2 minutes.
The People’s Republic of China is struggling with new outbreaks of the coronavirus. Although the city of Jilin in the northeast of the country is partially closed, the eleven million residents in the former epicenter of Wuhan will be assessed within ten days.
ME.In the fight against the coronavirus, China is once again closing a metropolis in parts. According to the state news agency Xinhua, train and bus connections from Jilin city (northeast China) (1.49 million inhabitants) were cut after a local virus outbreak. Also, only people who tested negative for the virus can leave the city.
The trigger for the stringent measures were around two dozen new infections, which have been detected in Jilin City and the province of the same name in recent days. The authorities spoke of a “very serious” situation.
The metropolis of Wuhan, the former epicenter of the crown outbreak, is also struggling with new diseases. According to media reports, the city in central China wants to test its eleven million inhabitants for a coronavirus test in record time.
Districts should organize mass testing in Wuhan
Authorities decided to take the action after six new infections were found in a residential area of Wuhan earlier this week after a long period without disease in the city. As the business magazine “Caixin” reported, people in Wuhan should be tested within ten days.
In late April, Wuhan, where the wave of infections began late last year, had evaluated about one million people, according to the report. The Chinese website “The Paper” reported that city districts should develop a plan on how the mass test can be carried out.
Nowhere in China have so many infections and deaths been reported as in Wuhan, whose hospitals were overwhelmed in late January and February. Wuhan was the first city in the world to be completely isolated for weeks due to the virus.
Of the more than 80,000 infections officially reported in China, 50,000 were in the metropolis alone. Similarly, of the more than 3,300 deaths recorded across the country, more than 2,500 were affected by Covid-19 lung disease in Wuhan. However, it is assumed that by no means all cases have been counted in official statistics.
China says it has a lot of control over the virus, but is struggling with local outbreaks.
