Long queues in front of ice cream parlors

On this mother’s day, two favorites seem to be very clear. Some rob florists, others ice cream parlors, and some perhaps both.

There are almost 2.5 million families (including single parents) in Austria. Many will remember “Mother Crown Day” forever. However: if you follow some rules, you should be spending time with the family today.

Three out of four mothers receive flowers today

Despite the circumstances, according to a survey by the Chamber of Commerce, 80 percent of Austrians over the age of 15 want to celebrate their mother. It’s a ray of hope for business in crisis: Mother’s Day is now the third-largest gift day of the year after Christmas and Easter. According to the trade association, everyone wants to spend an average of 59 euros on gifts, which would add up to 200 million euros.

Gift Classification: Three-quarters of all mothers receive flowers. This was also evident in Vienna-Döbling. Here was a real career in flower shops, including long lines in front of flower shops (see photo above).

The already summer temperatures also seem to awaken the desire for a culinary cooling. Ice cream parlors were at least as popular as flower shops. The career at Tichy & Co. has been building since relaxation. The line in front of the ice cream parlors lengthened every day.

New and updated: Protective masks are also a great gift this year. By the way: today there is also a jackpot in the lottery, which mother would not be happy with 1.4 million euros?

The crowd was already crowding into ice cream parlors on Saturday.

Corona Rules: Please no Bussi for moms

A virtual family reunion would be best. Otherwise: take action.

Sad, but true because of the crown: this year, the beloved mother should not even receive a kiss from her children (exception: they all live in the same home). This time we must follow some rules to contain the dangerous virus.

“All contacts between generations are at risk”

1. Better not entirely. It is the harsh reality: “All contacts between generations are a risk,” recalled Green Health Minister Rudolf Anschober this week. It would be best to celebrate Mother’s Day today by video chat or by phone.

2. Relocate outdoors. If you find yourself, ideally you should do it outdoors. The weather plays anyway (see right). It’s important here too: keep your distance.

3. Choose the location carefully. When choosing the outdoor meeting point, make sure it is not crowded there.

4. Home visits with great caution. Of course, home visits are allowed. But the Minister of Health recommends compliance with precautionary measures: distance, hygiene (washing and disinfecting hands) and protective masks.
