From Saturday to Sunday, 38 new coronavirus infections were reported in Austria. According to the Interior Ministry, the total number of people who were ever infected on Sunday morning (9:30 a.m.) was 15,871 people. 1,262 of them are still sick. This means that there has been a drop in 28 patients in the last 24 hours. The death toll has increased by three people from Saturday to 618. AGES speaks of a stable situation in Austria.

The three new deaths affected a woman and a man from Vienna and a woman in Styria. With a total of 143 and 136 cases, the two federal states remain the pioneers in the number of deaths. According to the Ministry of Health, a total of 316,508 tests have been carried out for coronavirus disease.

291 were still in hospital treatment on Mother’s Day, 18 fewer than the previous day. 72 intensive care patients mean a decrease in the 24-hour window by seven people. Almost 14,000 have recovered from a viral illness, or 13,991, 63 more than on Saturday.

AGES: stable situation with SARS-CoV-2 infections

The situation with SARS-CoV-2 in Austria is relatively stable at a low level of newly diagnosed infections. Between April 24 and May 6, the effective number of infections was 0.81, and the number of new diagnoses decreased by 6.8 percent a day, the health and food safety agency (AGES) said . The situation in Vienna is apparently irrelevant.

In the previous observation period (April 16-28), before the exit restrictions expired, the actual number of reproductions had been 0.67 and the number of laboratory diagnoses had decreased by 4.2 per daily hundred. An effective number of reproductions below 1 indicates that infections are decreasing.

In general, the fluctuations are not very significant because the number of recently confirmed infections is generally low. In the recent past, for example, in Burgenland, Carinthia (even for several days), Lower Austria, Salzburg, Tyrol and Vorarlberg there have been days with or without a newly diagnosed SARS-CoV-2 infection. If a few new cases are found here, a “rate of increase” just seems artificially “dramatic.”

The situation of the Crown is also stable in Vienna

According to surveys and calculations by AGES specialists in cooperation with statisticians from the Graz University of Technology, the situation in the city of Vienna is also clearly stable: according to bar charts in the federal capital, they have never been diagnosed more out of 40 SARS CoV-2 infections occurred (nearly 200 each in two days in late March). Since April 24, it was mostly between 20 and 30.

The actual number of plays for Austria “scratched” around April 24 to a value of just 0.5 and then slowly increased again. In Burgenland it was recently (May 6) at just over 0.5, in Carinthia below 0.5. Upper Austria is also worth around 0.5, Salzburg is slightly above, as is Styria with around 0.7. In Tirol from the days around April 24, there was a slight increase from less than 0.5 to about 0.7. Vorarlberg has a factor of around 0.5.

Lower Austria recently had a SARS-CoV-2 replication number of around 0.8, with about ten diagnoses on May 6. Vienna was worth 1, with about 20 diagnoses (May 6), which shows no obvious differences from the days since mid-April. However, on April 4 and May 3, there were very few new diagnoses, from an epidemiological standpoint, so to speak, “outliers.”

Interpretation of fluctuations.

“Since the maximum number of cases was reached on March 26, the number of new cases has decreased. The estimated daily effective reproductive number for Austria has been less than 1 since April 4 and is 0.81 for May 6 (calculation range: 0.75 – 0.88).

Due to the relatively constant number of incidence cases (recently identified) in the last three weeks, both parameters are subject to certain random fluctuations, “epidemiologists wrote.

Therefore, interpretations should always be made in conjunction with the epidemiological curve. “An approximation of the effective number of reproductions to 1 means a constant number of incidence cases per day, but does not provide any information on the level of incidence of Covid-19 cases,” the experts stated. In some states, “the number of incidents is very small, so fluctuations in the actual number of replayings must be interpreted with great caution.”
