Since six people have already died from motorcycle accidents, the ÖAMTC traffic club offers tips for safe progress on two wheels.
Therefore, it is even more important to prepare for motorcycle summer with the proper training, according to ÖAMTC experts. Because accidents happen regularly due to wrong driver judgments. “In addition to the technical controls on the machines, a refreshment is also recommended for the drivers themselves after a long break from driving,” explains Georg Scheiblauer, chief motorcycle instructor at ÖAMTC Fahrtechnik. “Due to the Corona crisis, for many people it is now more than half a year between the winter of the motorcycle and the first ride. Getting the right machine feel is therefore extremely important, even for long-time cyclists weather”.
Cyclists should take this seriously now
* Total concentration on the motorcycle saddle and proactive riding style are essential for safe riding. “In his own interest, a motorcyclist can expect other drivers to make mistakes,” said Scheiblauer.
* Adjusted speed: “Only those who pay attention to speed and adjust it according to traffic circumstances have the opportunity to correct the mistakes of other road users in critical situations,” advises the bicycle professional.
* Motorcyclists must be able to correctly assess the corresponding lanes on the road. “Dark spots on curves can be dangerous traces of diesel. If you don’t react properly in this case, you are at risk of a fatal fall,” says Scheiblauer.
* Be sure to wear suitable protective clothing. “Driving without good motorcycle clothing is negligent, because as a cyclist you have no deformation zone.”
Training in driving techniques is recommended.
At the beginning of the season, training in driving techniques on suitable routes is recommended, under protected conditions, also for frequent drivers, few drivers or even returnees. ÖAMTC Fahrtechnik instructors have been motorcyclists for a long time, many were and are successful motor sports enthusiasts and can therefore give practical advice. In the course of training, cyclists learn, among other things, how to react optimally and quickly to dangerous situations with the motorcycle in road traffic.
This includes correct cornering technology, visual guidance and emergency braking. “It doesn’t matter how experienced you are: practice makes perfect,” says Scheiblauer. “Especially skilful braking and evasion must be trained regularly so you can escape without a fall in an emergency. We train many processes and maneuvers that you may only need once, but then can save your life.”
