“The antibodies present in the blood plasma of recovered people help seriously ill people to overcome the infection,” said Upper Austria. Red Cross President Aichinger quotes.
The recovery of the so-called convalescent plasma is an important step in the treatment of sick people. Leading pharmaceutical companies with plasma products are currently developing concentrated hyperimmunoglobulin preparations against Covid-19 that contain concentrated antibodies. However, they also have to be approved as a medicine. However, “convalescent plasma” would be available immediately.
Prerequisite: infection diagnosed with mucus swab
The Red Cross is now urgently looking for people who have already survived Covid-19 to alleviate severe Covid-19 cases. “It is important that this disease was clearly diagnosed with a swab test of the mucosa of the ear, nose and throat to ensure that this person really had Covid-19,” Aichinger emphasized. In these cases, the human body has certainly developed those antibodies that help the immune system destroy coronaviruses.
The donor replicates antibodies
Part of these antibodies, which Genesene has successfully produced, can now be removed from the blood using a special procedure at the Red Cross. “The blood fluid that is taken, along with the antibodies, is given to a sick person in Austria in a few days,” explained Gerhard Schuster, medical director of the blood donation service for Upper Austria. The donor simulates the antibodies and remains protected against the coronavirus.
An appointment is made for the plasma donation (0732 777 000 261).
