Documentary supported by FERNSEHFONDS AUSTRIA on the history and stories behind the Vienna Cathedral fire in 1945

Vienna (OTS) Sparks from neighboring roofs left Vienna’s Stephansdom in ruins in the closing days of World War II. The wonderful roof construction made of larch wood was more than susceptible to it. But is that the whole story behind the accident? And whose stories are intertwined with the sinking of the “Steffl”?

In the documentary “Brandakte Stephansdom …” of embfilm production, financed by FERNSEHFONDS AUSTRIA, the cathedral architect Wolfgang Zehetner, among other things, used cutting-edge computer technology to investigate the course of the catastrophe 75 years ago. In recreated scenes and spectacular images, the film also talks about people whose lives influenced the Viennese landmark and its destruction on April 13, 1945.

To this day, 75 years after the catastrophe, ORF III is showing the documentary “Fire of the Cathedral of San Esteban – reconstruction of a catastrophe” on Easter Monday, April 13, 2020, at 8:15 p.m. (Please note that program changes are always possible due to current events).
