Leftist US senator Bernie Sanders (78) exits the Democratic presidential race.
He announced it on Wednesday. This clears the way for the presidential candidacy of former President Joe Biden (77).
Defeat in the primaries.
The primaries are paving the way for the Democrats’ nomination convention in the summer, which will mark the party’s presidential candidate.
However, due to the Corona crisis, not all primaries were able to be withdrawn. The last ones were in Florida, Illinois and Arizona in mid-March. There were 441 delegate votes for this party conference; this corresponds to about eleven percent of the party’s regular delegates. Biden won all three states; previously he had won 16 states.
Even then, Biden reached out to Sanders’ followers. He and his competitor may have different views on “tactics, but we share a common vision.”
The center politician addressed the “young voters inspired by Senator Sanders”: “I hear you. I know what is at stake. I know what we have to do.”
Trump: “This is not a way out”
For the President of the United States, Donald Trump (73), however, is only a half-hearted withdrawal from Sanders.

Trump in the White House: “It really hasn’t come out.” Sanders is holding on to his previously retired delegate votes and wants to raise more in the upcoming primaries.
“This is not a way out,” said Trump. “This is a strange thing that is happening there.” He assumed that Sanders wanted to use the delegates’ votes as leverage for the negotiations.
