Nasal boils are one of the most painful forms of boils because they irritate every movement of the face. Find out how to get rid of the boil and what treatment is particularly helpful here.
By permanently stressing the skin or touching the face with dirty fingers, bacteria can easily enter the layers of the skin and cause inflammation there. Often only pimples are formed, but in some cases bacteria can penetrate the deeper layers of the skin and accumulate there to form a painful nodular structure – a boil.
What is a nasal boil?
A nasal boil is a bacterial inflammation in the nose area. Inflammation can occur both inside, at the nasal entrance, and outside, at the tip of the nose or at the bridge of the nose. Often these are bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus), which penetrate the deeper layers of the skin and accumulate around the hair follicle. The follicle hardens around a pus and is very painful. You can feel a noticeable tug, especially when you talk or chew.
In many cases, the area around the nasal boil is swollen. Long nasal hair, as well as chronic inflammation of the nasal mucosa, support the formation of a nasal boil. People with a weakened immune system, like people with diabetes, are particularly affected.
Staphylococcus aureus
Boils are often caused by the skin bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. They colonize both the skin and the mucous membranes. In addition to boils, Staphylococcus aureus can also cause abscesses and other wound infections.
What are the symptoms?
The inflammation is often felt under the skin. This increases within a few days, sometimes even hours. A small, tight swelling forms, which is also very painful, warm, and very red. A knot is noted below the elevation, which resembles a large grain. Later, the pus accumulates in the nasal boil, which then empties itself. The boils of the nose are between a half centimeter and two centimeters in diameter.
Nasal boil: treatment of inflammation.
As a general rule, a nasal boil is harmless and heals only in a few days or weeks. To do this, however, treatment should be done with disinfectant ointments and thermal wraps or compresses or a red light lamp. You can also apply thin antiseptic ointments to the boil.
Also, the nasal boil should not be touched. Do not push or pull on the affected area. You should also refrain from cutting or dealing with agents that have not been prescribed by a doctor.
For treatment to be successful, the nasal boil and its surroundings must be kept as still as possible. In this way, the spread can be prevented inside and outside. In some cases, this may mean a short bed rest and not talking or chewing. The food should be quite soft or even liquid.
Warning
If a nasal boil is not properly treated, scars may appear.
Do you have to go to the doctor for a nasal boil?
If the nasal boil does not heal, becomes inflamed, or spreads through the facial veins to the eye, you should immediately consult a dermatologist or family doctor. They may prescribe antibiotics in the form of tablets or ointments or a so-called traction ointment with the active ingredient ammonium bituminosulfonate.
It is important to get medical help if the condition worsens and not try to eliminate nasal fever. This generally worsens the situation. In the worst case scenario, boiling bacteria can enter the bloodstream and thus lead to blood poisoning. Then thrombosis, phlebitis, or even meningitis (meningitis) may be at risk.
Another reason to see a doctor for a nasal fever is if the doctor keeps coming back or causing severe pain. In these cases, inflammation on the face can also be another disease, such as diabetes or a chronic infection.
Can nasal boils be removed?
If the ointment does not work or a lot of pus has accumulated in the nasal boil, the doctor should remove it professionally. Treatment often takes only a few minutes. For this, the inflammation opens and pus is removed. The wound should be disinfected regularly and treated with an anti-inflammatory ointment. It is also important that the affected area does not move until the wound has healed enough. Therefore, it is often necessary to do so without speaking or chewing.
Can you avoid nasal fever?
To prevent painful inflammation of the hair follicle on the face, you should
- just touch your face with clean fingers,
- ensure adequate personal hygiene,
- sufficiently disinfect the affected areas after waxing on the face,
- don’t squeeze pimples or swelling on your face and
- Give your skin enough air to breathe.
Also try to avoid permanent rubbing of objects, such as cloth, or to soothe the area afterward.
Also, talk to your doctor about whether you may have a history of stress or whether taking certain medications, such as cortisone, can cause boils.
