Super League participant FC Sion has posted a letter on social media that he sent to the Swiss Football League (SFL). Among other things, the club proposes to expand the top division for the next season from ten to twelve teams.
According to Sions President Christian Constantin, the SFL would meet the terms of television rights holders if the current season were canceled and the league expanded by two teams. The current contract includes 65 Super League games for the interrupted and 180 games for next season. If a double round were completed with twelve teams, this would result in 44 match days with 264 games, “19 more games than we would fulfill the current contract,” said Constantin. According to Constantin’s idea, the Challenge League would be played with eight teams in 34 rounds and play-offs.
However, it is not that far away yet, despite the coronavirus pandemic, there is still hope in Switzerland that the season on green grass may not end. After 23 games, St. Gallen is tied ahead of the Young Boys Bern. FC Basel, coached by former team boss ÖFB Marcel Koller, follows five points away.
In Austria, the top two teams in the league, SV Ried and Austria Klagenfurt, called for an increase in the Bundesliga from twelve to 14 teams at the extraordinary general assembly on Thursday.
