ANDThe Greek island of Crete was shaken by a severe earthquake on Saturday. The center of the 6.0 magnitude earthquake was 55 kilometers south of the coastal city of Ierapetra, authorities in Athens said. According to the police, there were initially no reports of casualties or major property damage. There were isolated landslides.

The earthquake occurred about 15 kilometers below the ocean floor, but was felt across the island, reports state television ERT. “We are not worried. It happened very deep and far from the island,” Efthymios Lekkas, Greek geology professor and head of the Greek earthquake protection agency, said on the Skai news channel.

Due to the movement of the tectonic plates, earthquakes occur repeatedly in the Mediterranean region. In July 2017, two people died in a magnitude 6.7 earthquake on the island of Kos. In 1999, 143 people died in an earthquake in the capital Athens region.
