31 apprenticeships in gastronomy, but only two candidates

94 of them belong to the metal and electronics sector, 52 to construction and 48 to retail. The hospitality industry follows in fourth place with 31 open apprenticeships. “Our caterers know that they cannot do without apprentices. Therefore, despite today’s difficult circumstances, young people are being sought for cooking and serving,” says Christa Hochgatterer, Director of AMS.

However, filling these positions should not be easy: only two interested parties have registered with AMS Perg for an apprenticeship in gastronomy. Hochgatterer: “The events of the past year, of course, have had an effect.” In addition, companies must take advantage of a shrinking supply of young people. On the one hand, due to lower births, on the other hand, due to competition from higher education schools.

Testimony doesn’t say it all

In this context, companies must be prepared to give people with less than good references a chance. For example, by agreeing to an extended trial period. “The certificate doesn’t say everything about a person. We have often had the experience that young people who left school with a bad certificate have become very good learners,” says the director of Perger AMS. This also applies to youth with special educational needs. Now is the ideal time for young people to apply for an apprenticeship in the region.
