AT&T boss over whether Tenet Wonder Woman 1984 to skip theaters for VOD

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to shake theatrical releases, AT&T CEO John Stankey said he would be very surprised if Tenet or Wonder Woman 1984 premiered on streaming services or as video on demand. Stankey spoke about these two Warner Bros movies. AT&T is the parent company of Warner Bros. – in a recent call for earnings and reiterated the importance of theatrical releases for tent movies like Tenet and Wonder Woman 1984. However, he did not rule out the subscription and integration of VOD in the future agenda of the company.

Every movie delayed due to coronavirus (so far)

“I think there could be some things that we had originally rented and built for theatrical release that might migrate to a build (subscription and video on demand)?” Stankey asked during the earnings call, according to The Wrap. “Of course I think that could happen. Is it going to happen in a movie like Tenet or something like Wonder Woman 1984? I would be very surprised if that was the case.”

Stankey went one step further and said he can “assure you on Tenet that this will not be the case.” He said theatrical release will always play a role for Warner Bros. There is content that is more enjoyable and better to watch in theaters than in a living room, Stankey added.

Stankey went on and said that the content in the margins could be considered better for distribution in “other construction”, probably alluding to VOD. Universal Pictures’ Trolls World Tour took a theatrical detour down that route and was a great success.Tenet was delayed until August last month before it was announced this week that it had been indefinitely delayed. This news comes after reports that Tenet director Christopher Nolan pushed for a July release date, despite the Warner Bros. market judgment.

On the DC side of the Warner Bros. movies, Wonder Woman 1984 is looking for a release date of October 2, 2020, though considering the movie has already been delayed four times, who really knows when it will hit the cinemas.

In fact, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins to pause her future plans for additional films. As we patiently wait for the theatrical release of the movie, read up on the movie’s Kristen Wiig character Cheetah and then see how Hero Within is making some Wonder Woman 1984-inspired apparel available to everyone at home. Here are some ways to help and stay safe during the Coronavirus pandemic.
